Mythological Story

It is said that Goddess Laxmi was unhappy with God Vishnu seeing as he used an undisciplined style of sleeping. It generally took place when Vishnu slept meant for times and there were days and nights when he didn't rest in any way. It had been because of his this kind of behavior that different gods and goddesses acquired to wait for very long to meet him. Furthermore, demons took advantage of this highly, leading to the propagate of Adharma on the planet thereby. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi complained regarding each one of these to Lord Vishnu.

Vishnu promised Laxmi to create a solution soon. In the meantime, the Devas visited Vishnu to tell him about the burglary of the Vedas by Sankhyayan, an evil presence. The demon had quickly spread Adharma all around. On seeing and hearing this, Lord Vishnu guaranteed the Devas that they would have the capacity to get back the Vedas. After battling for quite a long time with Demon Sankhyayan, he was powerful in defeating Sankhyayan. He was then able to return the Vedas to the gods. After that event, Vishnu went to sleep for four months.

His sleep began from Ashadha Ekadashi that is also known as Dev Shyani Ekadashi. And his sleep continued till Kartik Ekadashi which is known as Prabodhini Ekadashi. Since then, the day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi came into being.

Puja Method

The courtyard or the room ought to be cleaned. Then with the help of limestone (chuna) and geru (ochre), the picture of the Lord Vishnu is drawn on the ground.

On drying of the picture, some fruit such as sugarcane, kheel, batashe, radish, and singhara & money kept on it. After that, it is covered with a paraat (plate) or wooden basket.

In the night, puja is performed with water, roli, kalava (colored thread), rice, ghee for Diya & cotton.

The Deepak or soil lamps are lit and devotional songs such as utho dev—jaago dev are sung by playing the hand on paraat (plate) or wooden basket and then remove it and put a burning a lamp in that place.

It is said to be the beginning of an auspicious timing since it ends the period of Lord Vishnu ’s sleep and he wakes up on this very day. People took fast on Prabodhini Ekadashi. It really is believed that if someone observes fast on the entire day of Dev-Prabodhini Ekadashi, his/her past & present sins get abolished. This day is considered so auspicious that it marks the beginning of the wedding season in Hindus.

Tulsi Vivah

The celebration of Tulsi Puja is commended in India on the Ekadashi in a splendid portion of Kartik month. Devotees should have a Tulsi plant and a black stone known as Shaligram, representing Vishnu to perform the marriage of Tulsi. In case the stone is unavailable, one can also use an image or an idol of the God Vishnu. This is a very important part of the puja. Tulsi plant is dressed up and decorated with traditional ornaments to make her look like a bride. A traditional rangoli is made around the place where Tulsi Vivah is to be performed. Then simply, prayers will be performed for the prosperity of all family members & relatives. It is believed that a person who follows the tradition of marrying Tulsi to Lord Vishnu earns the credit of performing Kanyadaan (to marry off one's daughter).

In fact, Devouthan Ekadashi is considered as the closing day of the Deepawali Festival. Remembering Lakshmi, happiness, and prosperity, wealth, health and happiness are all in the house. Therefore, remembering the virtue of Lakshmi on this day should not be forgotten.
