Navratri pooja is one amongst the foremost pooja done by Hindus. Navratri pooja is devoted to worshiping Maa Durga and is said to confer great quality and prosperity to the observers. It is believed that fasting on Navratri is very auspicious. To celebrate the festival, a number of poojas are conducted all over the nine days.

Here is an easy Sharad Navratri pooja vidhi for those who wish to perform it in their homes.


Materials required:

Certain items are required to perform the Navratri pooja. These may include the idol or picture of Goddess Durga, Durga Sapthashati book, a clay pot with fertile soil for sowing barley seeds,  Kalash/pitcher(made of gold, silver, copper or clay without any defect) , pure desi ghee/clarified butter, panchmeva (five types of dry fruits), a piece of red cloth, fresh washed mango leaves, coin, 1 bell, one coconut, roli (red color for tilak), moli (red sacred thread), chawal (rice), paan (betel leaves), sabut supari (beetle nuts), cloves, camphor (kapur), kumkum (vermilion) , small hawan kund (pot) with hawan samagri packet and chowki for the idol or picture, red cloth to spread on the chowki. You may additionally want few incense sticks, dhoop bati and matchstick. The flowers used for Navratri pooja could include rose, lotus and red hibiscus. You may offer fresh fruits and sweets such as halwa, as prasad. You may need a Panchpatra containing spoon and water. A mat ought to be used for sitting in an exceedingly straight posture to perform the pooja.


Preparations for Navratri Pooja:

In order to perform the pooja, take a shower within the morning and wear clean clothes. Place the idol or picture of Ma Durga on chowki at your pooja room and place a red duppta (chunni) with fresh flower garland round the idol/image. For 'Kalashsthapna' ritual, fill the Kalash with water and place 5 mango leaves. Put the lid on the mouth of Kalash. Take a coconut wrapped in red cloth & tie a moli around it. Place it on the top of Kalash(pitcher) and tie a moli/red thread around the Kalash. Draw the swastika and Om symbol on Kalash with roli. Near the chowki, place the clay pot with soil and sow the barley seeds and sprinkle water on it. The Ghat Sthapana must be done during the right Muhurat consulting the panchaang. Light the diya (filled with ghee), incense sticks and Dhoop batti and then worship the deity & Kalash with water, roli/kumkum, rice, & flowers. Thereafter, you may add burning coal to a clay pot and pour pure ghee (clarified butter) over it. Offer a small piece of the Mithai (sweet) & a pair of clove to the fire. Continue adding ghee to the fire at regular intervals. Ensure that you keep up the light throughout in your pooja. After that, you may read Durga Saptashati, Durga Chailsa & sing the aarti of Durga maa with the lighting diya and the ringing bell to finish up the pooja. If you want, you may request a pandit to do this pooja at your home. Some people do havan daily to please the Maa Durga while some do this havan only Ashtami or Navmi.

Note:

Every day a little water is sprinkled over barley seeds for growing up.

The garland placed around the idol should be changed every day.

Instead of coal, you may also use camphor in required quantity for offering a piece of sweet & clove to the fire.   


Ghat Visarjan on Navratri:

After the nine days, pooja is over, the visarjan or conclusion is done on the tenth day. On the 10th day, take a shower in the morning and be seated in front of pooja place. Take some flowers and raw rice in your hands and say the following prayer “Dear gods, thank you for accepting our humble invitation to visit our home, stay in our home for nine days and bless the pooja. We dedicate the nine days pooja to you with full devotion and love. Now you may please leave for your divine abodes and visit us when we pray you again.” Offer the flowers and raw rice to the deities. Slightly move the ghat as a mark of conclusion.

Navratri pooja is a simple but highly significant and beneficial pooja to be performed by the households with devotion year on year. You can do the pooja in a similar way for Chaitra Navratri and in addition Sharad Navratri. Households doing the pooja sincerely will be blessed with richness, wealth, health, happiness and peace.
