There are different stories about Lord Ganesha’s birth:

One legend portrays that Ganesha was made by goddess Parvati out of the soil and set out to protect her security while she had her shower. At the point when Ganesha halted Lord Shiva from entering their home, he got angry and severed Ganesha’s head. Parvati was heart-broken and to appease her, Lord Shiva fixed an elephant’s head on the child and hence, the elephant-headed Ganesha appeared. The popular sweet dumpling modak believed to be Lord Ganesha's favorite food and hence during the Ganesha worship ceremony, the puja always finishes up with an offering of twenty-one modaks to the deity and as prasad. Modaks made with rice flour shell are favored, for this reason, however, wheat shell version is also used. Apart from Modaks, Puran Poli also makes for one of the major and popular sweets during Ganesh Chaturthi. Like modaks, Puran Poli can likewise be offered as "bhog" to the Lord and later filled in as Prasad. Apart from these two, other sweets are also offered to the Lord Ganesha.

Once the worship is complete, the statues are carried to immerse in procession to the nearest body of water. This procession and immersion are accompanied with dancing and the sound of exciting drum-beats, devotional songs, and exploding firecrackers. As the holy idol is immersed amidst loud chants of "Ganesh Maharaj Ki Jai!" the festival comes to an end with pleas to the Lord to return the next year "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Aglay Baras Tu Jaldi aa.”

In few parts of India, Ganesha is the divine force of the harvest, and after the immersion ceremony is over, sand or clay from the riverbed is brought back to the farm and scattered around the barns and storerooms.
